An important component of SLC’s Transgender Rights Initiative is building the capacity of others in Florida to represent, protect, affirm, and support transgender individuals statewide.

During Pride Month and on into July we are holding two trainings for which registration is now open. 

  • Pride Month 2021: Best Practices for Representing LGBTQ+ Youth will be held June 29 through the Florida Legal Services Statewide Training Initiative and is sponsored by the Public Interest Law Section of The Florida Bar. Register here.
  • Free Statewide Transgender Legal Name and Gender Marker Change Clinic will be presented by SLC and Akerman on July 10th. Register here.

In addition, on June 30, we will hold a diversity training for the Melbourne Police Department on Best Practices for Police in Interacting with Transgender Individuals.

And on June 14, we held a training for Akerman LLP on LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency and Navigating the Name Change Process​​​​​​​ as part of their Pro Bono Attorney Initiative.

Part of our training model involves LGBTQ+ cultural competency training to ensure that all who interact with and serve the community understand how to be affirming and inclusive in their language and interactions.

A study by the National Association for Law Placement (NALP) found that the overall percentage of openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) lawyers is around 2.64%. Recognizing that it can be difficult for people to understand and respond to the unique needs of individuals who have life experiences and cultural and sexual identities different from themselves, SLC encourages attorneys and other professionals to continuously learn, grow, and develop cultural competency in interacting with diverse communities.
