VOTE NO ON PROPOSED CAMPING BAN, ADVOCATES SAY TO FORT LAUDERDALE CITY COMMISSION

The City of Fort Lauderdale will consider amendments to its camping ordinance tonight at 6pm. The proposed amendments will expand the geographic scope of the City’s current camping ordinance to much of the City during an unprecedented public health emergency. SLC, along with legal advocacy organizations Florida Justice Institute, Florida Legal Services, the ACLU of Florida, and the South Florida Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild submitted written comments urging City Commissioners to vote No on the proposed ordinance. The letter urges the City to cease criminalizing homeless people for conduct necessary to survival and instead focus its efforts on leveraging newly available federal funding to move people experiencing homelessness into safer housing solutions.
